Build-A-Bed Day: A Community Effort to Provide 48 Beds for Local Children

On Monday, September 22, Pennings & Sons, in partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), hosted our third annual Build-A-Bed Day. This event brought together our entire company with a goal of constructing 50 beds for children in the Kalamazoo area who do not have a bed of their own. The day was filled with teamwork, dedication, and a shared commitment to making a difference in the lives of local families.

A Day of Service and Community Building

The Build-A-Bed Day event was not only an opportunity to give back to the community but also served as a team-building experience for our staff. All of our employees came together, working side by side, making frames from a pile of wood. This collaborative effort fostered a sense of unity and pride among our team members as we worked towards a common goal. It is fun for our skilled carpenters be able to chuckle at our office staff working various tools and sanders.

Supporting a Nationwide Mission – Locally
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that no child sleeps on the floor in our town. Through their local chapters, SHP mobilizes volunteers to build and deliver beds to children in need. As part of their mission, SHP organizes Build Days, where communities & groups can come together to construct beds for local children Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

Media Coverage and Community Impact
The impact of our Build-A-Bed Day was highlighted by local media coverage. WWMT TV3 featured our event in a news segment, showcasing the collaborative efforts of Pennings & Sons and Sleep in Heavenly Peace. The coverage helped raise awareness about the issue of child bed lessness in our community and the steps being taken to address it. We could not have held this event without the help of our sponsors; One Way Products, Westwood Christian Reformed Church, Valley Family Church, and Sign Impressions.

Looking Ahead
As we reflect on the success of this year’s Build-A-Bed Day, we are grateful for the opportunity to help our community while having fun doing so. Together, we have made a tangible difference in the lives of 48 children, providing them with a safe and comfortable place to sleep. We look forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come and expanding our efforts to serve even more children in need.
